Richard Ballantine, the cycling guru of the 70s, 80s, and 90s, has written another volume, this time it's on bicycle commuting in the United Kingdom. I stress the United Kingdom, as little of the book's advice on commuting on London streets is very relevant to the vastly different conditions in North America and other parts of the world.
From the big-budget Ballantine works of the 90s, City Cycling is a poor cousin by comparison. With the decline of book publishing budgets, Ballantine was apparently reduced to using his own friends and relatives as models, and the photography is much worse than his earlier books. Like his earlier books, Ballantine stubbornly includes a chapter on bike repair that's just about useless today: given the wide variety in modern cycle designs and engineering, this sort of add-on repair chapter went out of style 30 years ago (many bits of advice seem to end with phrases along the lines of, 'this repair is best done by a bike shop'. Do even beginning riders needs such 'advice'.
Some of City Cycling's advice, such as using adjustable (read: prone to slippage) stems on daily commuter bikes seems downright dangerous to me. Fortunately, most of the useful information Ballantine does provide can be found in his earlier works, so there's no need to buy this one. I can't recommend this book.
