The textbook adopts a thematic approach, focusing on key facets of literary and cultural criticism while using the texts to build students' vocabulary and cultural knowledge, to hone their reading and interpretive strategies, and to boost their oral and written communication. The textbook offers a wide variety of activities that lead students through literary analysis using a task-based approach. Unit themes: (1) Identity and race, ethnicity, gender, and class; (2) Existential identity; (3) Space and time and identity; (4) Political and sexual identity.
