While Chuck Mangione's projects with orchestras in the 1970s tended to be bland (although best-sellers), his best jazz work came when the flugelhornist jammed with his quartet, which in 1971 also included Gerry Niewood on soprano and flute, bassist Joel DiBartolo and drummer Ron Davis. This out-of-print LP finds Mangione taking melodic and worthwhile solos on such numbers as "Land of Make Believe," Freddie Hubbard's "Little Sunflower" and "Manha De Carnival." ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
