The Mills Brothers were one of greatest vocal groups ever to enter a recording studio, charting an astounding 71 Top 40 hits in their four-decade career. Although best known for their smooth pop hits of the '40s ("Glow Worm," etc.), brothers Herbert, Donald, Harry, and John Mills Jr. were at their innovative and creative best in the 1930s, when they were still working at the jazz end of the spectrum. Blessed with amazing voices and an unerring sense of harmony, the brothers also had the uncanny ability to vocally imitate musical instruments, particularly horns, making them the only group in pop history capable of recording instrumental tracks that actually had no instruments on them. The Chronological, Vol. 6: 1935-1939 collection, the last in a series of six discs covering the Mills Brothers' 1930s output, catches them just as they were poised to make the transition from jazz to pop.
