The whole profits amount to 28 10s. od. per annum." Although there is no mention of John Braddyll's name in this statement, he, assisted by Anthony Sawrey, of Plumpton, was one of the moving spirits. He had married Sarah, sole heir of Myles Dodding, and was the most loyal and beneficent friend the church in Ulverston ever possessed. By documents still preserved in the parish chest, we find that his untiring zeal was exerted to assist the" twenty-four" in their efforts to increase the emolument. For the first time St. Mary's could boast a vicarage. On 1689-1695. April 2, 1689, an indenture of lease and re-lease, between AvTdS"ge Pr John Wright, of the one part, and John Braddyll, Esq., and Anthony Sawrey, gent., of the other, conveyed "all that messuage and three acres of land, situate in Rattenrow, near the Tarnside, called Kirktarne t or Tarnclose" to the two latter; and by them, on April 5, 1695, a deed was drawn up, witnessed by John Corker, Edward Petty, William Leathom, John Woodburne, John Edmondson, and Henry Leathom, all of Ulverston; John Corker, of Lund, James Penny, of Penny Bridge, and John Benson, of Scathwaite.J declaring the same to be devoted to the use of the minister of the Parish Church and his successors for ever.
