Very Good. First edition. Octavo. 136pp., text printed in two columns. In the original publisher's cloth. Singed in pencil on the front free endpaper: "Jno. P. Gillis Commo. [Commodore] US Navy." Ex-library copy with spine label, bookplate, rear pocket, and one small number stamp. Light wear at the spine ends and corners, a very good, tight and clean copy. Jonathan P. Gillis was the captain of the USS Ossipee, a screw sloop of war in the Union Navy during the American Civil War. During the war, he also commanded the USS Monticello and the USS Seminole, and reached the rank of Commodore. Gillis was a Delaware native who served in the Mexican-American War and on Perry's 1853-54 expedition to Japan. A nice association copy. *Sabin* 12965.
