Seller's Description:
BRAND NEW! 158 Pages. Dr. Machen was the face of Protestant fundamentalist Christianity in the United States during the 1920s and early 30s. A Northern Presbyterian, he fought valiantly to hold that denomination to its historic and Scriptural roots. He upheld the usual "Fundamentalist" positions of inerrancy of the Bible and a literal reading of its contents but, in some ways, departed from the steortypical image of fundamentalists. He was not a tee-totaler (and this at the heighth of Prohibition), accepted lower (though not higher) criticism of the texts of the Scriptures and, though he thoroughly rejected evolution, did not believe in 6 24 hour day creation as later conservatives insistted upon. A nuanced intellectual, he remained nevertheless an ardent opponent of modernism in American Christianity and was admired by such diverse people as Walter Lippmann and the agnostic H. L. Mencken. Chosen as one of the 100 most influential books of the 20th century by "Christianity Today" magazine, the books posits that one cannot be a liberal AND a Christian but must choose. It is either Liberalism or Christianity, not both. An abiding classic.

Please allow me to direct you to my blog post about this book. I include 2 embedded youtube videos, one link to play.google.com which does an amazing job in presenting the book in various formats, and this block quote from page 69:
"When Jesus said, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest," he was speaking not as a philosopher calling pupils to his school; but as One who was in possession of rich stores of divine grace. And this much at least the disciples knew. They knew well in their heart of hearts that they had no right to stand in the Kingdom; they knew that only Jesus could win them entrance there. They did not yet know fully how Jesus could make them children of God; but they did know that He could do it and He alone. And in that trust all the theology of the great Christian creeds was in expectation contained."
