Muller has read it all, primary sources and secondary contemporary opinion regarding them. This is particularly valuable because there are a considerable number of contemporary voices that lay claim to the "good will" associated with the theology of the reformation, and the authority of various of its theologians. Yet often even those claiming such continuity with the second generation of reformers have little familiarity with those whose names they borrow. Rather, what we seem to have is a case of some among our contemporaries being second or third generation disciples of especially 19th century theologians who were the ones claiming continuity, sometimes rather tenuous, with the early reformation era. Muller gives us a guided tour of the masters, perfectly suited to helping us decide for ourselves which modern students are truly made in the image of those masters.
