Very energetic, very emotional, and very well played, the Jerusalem Quartet's recording of Shostakovich's String Quartets No. 1, No. 3, and No. 9 is convincing but not ultimately compelling. The Jerusalem sails over the First Quartet's closing Allegro, wails on the Fourth Quartet's opening Allegretto, flies through the Ninth Quartet's closing Allegro. It also brings easy lyricism to the First Quartet's opening Moderato, inward intensity to the Fourth Quartet's central Andantino, and tremendous enthusiasm to the Ninth Quartet's first Adagio. But while these are all admirable qualities, there is more to Shostakovich's String Quartets than is in the Jerusalem Quartet's recordings. The inner melancholy of the First Quartet's set of variations, the palpable fear of the Fourth Quartet's closing Allegretto, and the sense of anxious unease of the Ninth Quartet's opening Moderato con moto are only hinted at in these performances.
