But while these are all admirable qualities, there is more to Shostakovich's String Quartets than is in the Jerusalem Quartet's recordings. The inner melancholy of the First Quartet's set of variations, the palpable fear of the Fourth Quartet's closing Allegretto, and the sense of anxious unease of the Ninth Quartet's opening Moderato con moto are only hinted at in these performances.
