A pianist of extraordinary skill and sensitivity, Rudolf Buchbinder plays most of these pieces fairly close to the vest, with an introspection that suggests an awareness of Chopin's own preference for subdued, subtly veiled interpretations. Rarely does Buchbinder erupt with Lisztian intensity and passion, as he does in the opening Fantasy Impromptu No. 4 in C sharp minor, the Polonaise No. 5 in F sharp minor, and the Scherzo No. 2 in B flat minor. Regrettably, the piano used here sounds quite tinny and harsh at fortissimo, and the listener may be grateful that Buchbinder's greatest fury is limited to these three selections.
