This is a meticulously compiled anthology of lesbian writings from the seventeenth century onwards, with the occasional contribution from male writers for clarity or context. Faderman divides the material, as she sees it, into various phases: romantic friendship; "sexual inversion" - what we'd probably call "trans" today; lesbian as evil vampires, etc; literature of the closet - lesbian encoding, or disguised, indirect communication of lesbian themes; coming out: 1970s-style feminism and post-feminist "flowerings". There is a lengthy preface, which should have been called an introduction; each section, however, does have a separate introduction.
A warning: the paperback copy has fairly delicate paper, so take care turning the pages.
