I would recommend this book to anyone who likes reading about famliies. Ms. Godden uses interesting devices to weave in a family's history and the history of their servants and house in the context of the present story, which concerns the newest up and coming generation. The idea, which I believe is true, is the influencing factors of family--going back several generations at least--is always with us. This is a powerful idea but stylistically, it could have been handled with more care. I think the book needs one more rewrite, and the current story is a bit contrived. This is made up though by the glimpse of a family over five generations and how all the members of the family influenced each other across and down through generations. Ms. Godden always manages to keep you turning the page.
