Seller's Description:
Fine- in Very Good- jacket. 8vo-over 7¾"-9¾" tall. The first edition stated, 302 pages, illustrated. "Of the thirty-nine American vessels which sailed into Arctic waters "to chase the blowhead" during the summer of 1871, only seven heeded Eskimo warnings that the season would be unusually short and the winter unusually severe. The rest-thirty-two of the finest whaling vessels in existence, carrying 1200 officers and crewmen-elected to cruise in the treacherous waters off Alaska's Point Barrow. Now suddenly, all thirty-two ships lay helplessly trapped or crushed in gale-driven pack ice. This book tells for the first time the full story of this disaster and the rescue of the shipwrecked victims-a rescue that, incredibly enough, did not result in the loss of a single human life." FINE-HARDCOVER, VERY GOOD-DUST JACKET. Dust jacket protected with a clear plastic acid-free jacket.
