Although the appointment of Carol Ann Duffy as the first ever woman Poet Laureate for the UK is long overdue, I am sad that it now seems unlikely James Fenton, the modern Renaissance Man of British Letters, will ever receive the honour - perhaps Her Majesty can be persuaded at least to award him a Companion of Honour.
