Chick Flix purports to collect "20 Huge Hits from Your Favorite Chick Flix!" While the album is mostly true to its word, there are a few strange inclusions; Dusty Springfield's "Son of a Preacher Man" and Urge Overkill's "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon" are without question two of the collection's best tracks, but the movie they're from -- Quentin Tarantino's gory, wisecracking gangster classic Pulp Fiction -- is the farthest thing from what's usually considered a chick flick. While these are extreme examples, Chick Flix is refreshingly diverse in its tastes, spanning ultra-girly songs like Lisa Loeb's "Stay" and Sixpence None the Richer's "Kiss Me," stylish pop like the Cardigans' "Lovefool," and melodramatic ballads like Annie Lennox's "Why." There's also disco galore, underscoring the upbeat yet empowering vibe of Diana Ross' "I'm Coming Out" and Donna Summer's "Last Dance" (which was thankfully chosen instead of the overplayed "I Will Survive"). The album also reaffirms the power of these songs to conjur up moments from these films, as with the aforementioned "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon" in Pulp Fiction, Mickey & Sylvia's "Love Is Strange" in Dirty Dancing, and Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" from Say Anything. Though it gets a little soggy at the end, tracks by Modern English, Simple Minds, and Roy Orbison keep the collection -- and the films that used them -- from getting too gooey. Even if Chick Flix's premise is a little predictable, the album is still plenty of fun for fans of chick flicks and pop music. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi
