The form of phosphorus in all these materials is the same, namely tricalcium phosphate Ca3(PO4)2-All these carriers of phosphorus are slow acting and should be used for the permanent upbuilding of the soil fertility rather than as an immediate source of phosphorus. Raw bones contain 9.5% phosphorus and 4% nitrogen; steamed bones contain 12% to 15% phosphorus and V/2% nitrogen; and bone tankage contains 3% to 4% phosphorus. Mineral Phosphates. There are a number of natural deposits of mineral phosphates in different portions of the world, some of the most important of which are in North America. The form in which the phosphorus exists in these deposits is tricalcium phosphate, but a variety of substances is associated with it. South Carolina phosphate contains 11 to 12% phosphorus with but a very small amount of iron and alumina. Florida phosphates occur in the forms of soft phosphate, pebble phosphate and boulder phosphate. Soft phosphate contains 8 to 13% phosphorus. It is more easily ground than most of these rocks and is often applied to the land without being converted into a superphosphate. Tennessee phosphate contains from 13 to 15% phosphorus. Basic slag, phosphate slag or Thomas phosphate is a by-product in the manufacture of steel from pig iron rich in phosphorus.
