Anhydrous boracic acid is heated with sodium in the end of a test-tube of thick glass. A slight detonation takes place as the boric oxide is decomposed. After the mass has cooled it is treated with water, which dissolves the borate of soda, while the boron can be gathered on a small filter. It is thoroughly washed and dried at a gentle heat. (b). OF SO-CALLED CRYSTALLIZED BORON. From solution in melted aluminum. Aluminum is fused in a carbon crucible with boracic acid or amorphous boron, and then the whole treated with hydrochloric acid, which dissolves the aluminum, leaving the boron crystals. II. PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES. Hardness of crystallized boron. It readily scratches glass. Preparation of boracic acid. Boracic acid is readily obtained by the decomposition of borax or borate of soda by a stronger acid. If to a warm, nearly-saturated solution of borax strong hydrochloric acid be added, as the solution cools glistening scales of boracic acid will separate out. Formation of borates. In opposition to this decomposition of borates just mentioned, we have the replacing action of boracic acid at higher temperatures. If the boracic acid prepared in the last experiment be mixed with an equal amount of common salt, and the two heated to fusion in a hessian or porcelain crucible, the salt is decomposed by the boracic acid, while hydrochloric acid is set free. This can be shown by holding over the mouth of the crucible a glass rod moistened with ammonia solution, when ammonium chloride will be formed; or by blue litmus paper. Flame of boracic acid. If boracic acid, or a mixture of borax and sulphuric acid, be placed in a capsule containing alcohol, and this ...
