I can't believe that I am the first person to review this book! I've chosen this one, but you really need to read all six in the series, starting with The Game of Kings. Lymond is the ultimate alpha male hero, incredibly handsome and charismatic which is a double-edged sword because people flock to him and want things from him all the time. This inevitably leads to situations where things go horribly wrong. His journey to equilibrium is as tortuous as one could possibly want.
The characters are beautifully drawn and the historical detail is unbelievable. In fact the attention to all the details is terrific: you can feel, smell and taste life in 16th Century Europe. The scene in Checkmate where Philippa and Lymond elude pursuit is magical and their relationship beautifully plotted and developed.
I could wax lyrical about this wonderful book (and series) all day. One word of caution, maybe: this is not an easy read. The complexity of the historical and political machinations and the hidden agendas of some of the characters, means it needs your concentration, but the rewards are amazing. This is exactly what a really good read should be: a flight of imagination and ultimately, a really satisfying read. Give yourself plenty of time, a comfy chair and a huge box of really good chocolate!
