Joe Gunther of the Vermont Special Investigations Unit is investigating the death of two men who seem to have nothing in common. However, upon researching their background, he finds that they both used internet chat rooms and had child pornography on their computers. Joe and his unit suspect that the men were lured to the area by someone wanting revenge for a prior sex act.
Archer Mayor always adds other cases to his units investigations and in this manner seems influenced by Ed McBain, one of the founders of the police procedural.
In "Chat" Joe's brother Leo and his mother are in a car accident at the start of the story. Leo knows cars and tells Joe that something was wrong with the car. Joe and his unit investigate the auto shop where the car was serviced and find something amiss.
There are other subplots that are nicely woven into the story. In addition, the taste of Vermont life that the author adds to the story makes the novel that much more unique and interesting.
Joe Gunther is a terrific protagonist. He's savvy, brave and a good administrator. He also shows his human side. He has a new girlfriend and is flattered that she finds him attractive.
The other characters are also well drawn and interesting.
This is the 19th Joe Gunther novel and the series never fails to entertain.
