Because Randy Sandke is best known as a swing trumpeter, this CD is a bit of a surprise; it features such highly individual modernists as the outrageous trombonist Ray Anderson, tenor great Michael Brecker, altoist Chris Potter, and multi-instrumentalist Scott Robinson, who is heard sticking to tenor on the several selections where he appears. As it turns out, Sandke had gone to school with Anderson and Brecker and is a much more flexible trumpeter than one might have thought. Joined by a talented rhythm section comprised of pianist Ted Rosenthal, bassist John Goldsby and drummer Marvin "Smitty" Smith, Sandke leads his unusual group through a variety of material ranging from a version of "Lullaby of Broadway" that often simulates a traffic jam, a cooking "Jordu" and four of his originals to the Bix Beiderbecke-associated "Oh Miss Hannah." This set is full of surprises (check out the baroque beginning of "Jordu") and there is plenty of space for each of Sandke's sidemen. Despite all of the potential competition, it is to his credit that Randy Sandke is not all overshadowed on his stimulating set from Concord. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
