The main focus of ââ?¬Å"Charlotte McMaster and the Messenger Angelââ?¬Â? is, of course, Charlotte, a young girl just about to finish the seventh grade. Charlotte is one who seems to find herself in trouble a lot. At the start of the story, we find her finishing up her weeks attending in-school suspension. If that is not enough of a punishment for her, the next day she must begin community service at a nursing home.
Charlotte is also adopted and wants her parents to tell her about her other parents, but no one seems to want to answer the questions. Her mother tells her she is not ready to know and her father just, in Charlottes opinion, avoids the house and anything that happens inside it. To be honest, Charlotte is pretty certain that her father does not even like her all that much. In addition, we get to meet her best friend, Ellie, and see that Ellies home life is not very good, either. All her parents do is fight. Ellie has no idea why and it scares her.
Enter Mrs. Abigail Hooper, the elderly woman that Charlotte is assigned to help take care of when she begins her community service. Initially Charlotte believes that Mrs. Hooper might be just a bit crazytalking about faith and angels that come to her and allow her to visit her recently-deceased husband in Heaven.
As she spends more time with Mrs. Hooper, however, Charlotte begins to learn a lot about believing in herself and asking for help from God to work through her own problems. Ellie also beings to visit Mrs. Hooper and the same thing happens to her. Mrs. Hooper may just be the one who can help both girls find the answers they are looking for.
As I said earlier, everything about this story is just beautiful, even when the topics are very painful and confusing. The story is perfectly written, and the characters are simply marvelous. I loved watching Charlotte grow and learn that she does not have to feel alone in the world. I adored watching Ellie come to terms with her own family and bring them back together. Each of the girls is a very well-developed character and they are both so strong in their own ways, even if they do not think they are. There are just not enough good things to say about the character of Abigail Hooper. I think that every child in the world should have a ââ?¬Å"Mrs. Hooperââ?¬Â? that comes into their lives to teach them and to just be there to listen.
ââ?¬Å"Charlotte McMaster and the Messenger Angelââ?¬Â? is a book that should not be missed by anyone, child or adult. It is a charming story that will teach so many valuable lessons to young children and it will tug on the heartstrings of any person who reads it. I wish there were more books like this in the world and I think Terry Overton has done an incredible job in telling this story. Definitely 5 stars!!
