As a successful engineer he took on difficult feats such as the foundations for the Statue of Liberty, the foundation of Penfield Reef Lighthouse in Long Island Sound, the design of Butlers Flat Lighthouse at the entrance to the harbor of New Bedford, Massachusetts, and the Race Rock Light in Fisher's Island Sound. As he devoted more and more time to his hobby, which was painting, he traveled frequently to Europe and became known for his work in portraits, genre, and illustration.

Francis Hopkinson Smith (1838-1915) was a self-taught artist from Baltimore who trained and worked as a naval engineer, designing and/or working on such important projects as the foundation for the Statue of Liberty and the Race Rock Lighthouse off Block Island. He began spending summers in the White Mts. Of New Hampshire and later gained a reputation as "the most prolific artist of views of the region". He gained a reputation, however, in charcoal, drawing upon his superior skill as a draughtsman/engineer, and later produced a portfolio of several hundred sketches entitled "Venice of Today". This Archive traces his emotional and creative response to key sites in New York City, which resulted in his 1912 book Charcoals of New and Old New York, an amalgam of creative prose and charcoal sketches of Wall Street, The Skyscraper, The Brooklyn Bridge, The City Hall, Castle Garden, The Stock Exchange, Washington Square, and others. F. Hopkinson Smith was also a very successful author, creating works of fiction including "Colonel Carter of Cartersville; Gondola Days; The Fortunes of Oliver Horn; and non-fiction, such as his travelogue In Dickens's London, etc. EB; 4to 11"-13" tall.
