Seller's Description:
Very Good. Book Roberts Brothers 1891. Very good blue cloth hardcover. Previous owner's vintage inscription to endpaper. Small area of soiling to top of cover. Contains a new preface by Everett, who had since become a "preacher of the Gospel and the master of a boys' school." He explains his decision to reprint the book without revisions, notwithstanding that it was "full of crudities and inconsistencies" and received criticism on moral grounds.

Seller's Description:
VG. Duodecimo. Green cloth covered spine and boards with gilt outline lettering and black decoration on both the spine and front board. Fair amount of bumping at the head and tail of the spine and at the tips of the four outside corners. Some rubbing at the head and tail of the spine and at the tips of the corners, and all along the outside edges of the spine. A trace of rubbing around the outside edges of the boards. Very light facial rubbing. Lettering on both the spine and front board is all clear and easy to read. Yellow endpapers. Front hinge is starting in a few places, each very short. Binding is tight. Pages have a few age spots here and there, but are clean and crisp throughout. 282 pages. As far as I can tell, one illustration on page 247 and a second one on the frontis page, protected by a tissue. No dust jacket, possibly as issued, given the illustrated nature of the boards.

Seller's Description:
Very Good. Scarce early printing; first published in 1868. 12mo. 282pp. Four plates. Publisher's green cloth with gilt title and baseball decorations on the spine. A little mottling on the boards, modest wear at the spine ends and corners, an attractive, very good copy. Although Shannon refers to this as "The first known novel incorporating baseball activity" (p.39), we have handled one earlier (*Uncle Nat; or, The Good Time Which George and Frank Had, Trapping, Fishing, Camping Out, etc. * by Alfred Oldfellow. New York, 1865). Thus this is the second novel to feature a substantial amount of baseball activity (two and a half chapters, with an extended description of a schoolboy game), and the first to feature an obvious reference to the game in the title. The author, son of the famous orator Edward Everett and cousin of the author Edward Everett Hale, also served in Congress. An attractive copy.
