Sid Fleischman knows how to write kid's adventure novels. I've enjoyed all his books, but Chancy and the Grand Rascal and Mr. Mysterious & Company are not to be missed. The characters are courageous, loyal, generous and good humored and the plots roll along so quickly you hit the last page before you're ready for the story to end.
