Korngold's chamber music, though, still qualifies as neglected, and this superb recording of the composer's Piano Quintet in E major, Op. 15 and String Quartet No. 2 in E flat major, Op. 26, plus a rediscovered string quartet version of his popular incidental music for Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, has been successful right out of the box. The general line on Korngold's concert music is that he represented the musical last gap of old Vienna. His music certainly has this aspect, and tonally, it is late Romantic in its orientation, but in its structures, it is not derivative of Strauss or anyone else, and it's a bit misleading to call it conservative.
