While fans of great painting may pick up this book solely for the beautiful reproductions, biography and history buffs will be well-rewarded too. Alice Carter presents a riveting portrait of Cecilia Beaux and her rise as one of the great portraitists in American history. Raised in Philadelphia by her grandmother and aunts in the socially restrictive mid-ninteenth century, Cecilia rose to prominence in an era of intense artistic ferment (her contemporaries included Thomas Eakins, Robert Henri and William Merritt Chase) to achieve extraordinary success. Beaux's private life is treated delicately (she never married) and was bittersweet compared to her professional triumphs. Details of her daily life against the backdrop of historical events (Civil War, World War I) make this a fascinating biography. Along with the fine reproductions, this is an outstanding volume.
