Seller's Description:
Cambridge. 1976. Harvard University Press. 1st American Edition. Very Good in Slightly Worn Dustjacket With Some Tears. 0674104307. 196 pages. hardcover. Jacket: Edith Allard. keywords: Literature Poetry Literary Criticism Greece Alexandria. FROM THE PUBLISHER-‘A most penetrating, perceptive appreciation of this supremely memorable and haunting poet. It illuminates both his personal and his creative life. '-Mary Renault. C. P. Cavafy, one of the greatest of modern Greek poets, lived in Alexandria for all but a few of his seventy years. Rarely has a poet been so attached to a city. Alexandria became, for Cavafy, a central poetic metaphor and eventually a myth encompassing the entire Greek world. This book describes the making of that myth. Cavafy's earliest poetry was undistinguished; only with the discovery of the city as metaphor did he begin to find his unique voice. The refinement of the metaphor, traced here from its first manifestation in early poems and drafts, led to the creation of a unified work-in-progress over a period of twenty years. His city becomes, by stages, a ‘sensual city' rich with eroticism; ‘mythical Alexandria, ‘ the ancient city with its special way of life, from the Ptolemies to the Arab conquest; and an image in microcosm of the broad diaspora, the ‘world of Hellenism. ' Finally, his view of Alexandria comes to include a universal perspective, the tragic vision implicit in his last works. Cavafy was a private poet: he did not publish a collected edition in his lifetime, and he distributed his poems only to a select list of readers. His work has gradually earned a wide and devoted audience since his death in 1933, but this book is the first to treat his development comprehensively, analyzing in detail the most important poems from the various phases of his career. George Seferis wrote, ‘It is a strange and rare thing. He left us with the bitter curiosity we feel about a man who has been lost to us in the prime of life. ' Cavafy's Alexandria will help to satisfy that curiosity. While illuminating the poems, it recreates the life of the poet in the life and evolution of his work. inventory #43129.
