This book is the story of Ben and his parents. His mother, Margarethe married four times, surviving 3 of her husbands. His father and uncle migrated to the United States to fight in the Civil War, only to arrive too late. After meeting in San Francisco, they settled in Twentynine Palms and Banning in 1870 and Ben was the first white child born in the area. Ben and his brothers grew up with the local Indians, learned to track, hunt, and how to make and use bow nd arrows. One of his lifelong friend was Segundo Chino. He was well respected by both the white man and the Indian. Ben's mother was a true pioneer. She married four men, gave birth to eleven children, sailed half way around the world, helped her husbands mine for gold, raise sheep, and operated a boarding house and restaurant. She was one of four or five white women in the Banning area in 1885, and hosted Ramona author Helen Hunt Jackson. Of her eleven children, Ben was the most notable. He was involved in the Willie Boy hunt, investigated and testified at the trial of serial killer, Gordon Stewart Northcott, worked under famous prohibition leader, Pussyfoot Johnson, was friends with Tombstone's first mayor and the Epitaph's founder, John Clum.
