Nesta was an incredible person, loved and revered by all. Timothy White does well to capture the spirit and essence of the man we all know as Bob Marley. Chapter by chapter, White digs underneath the surface to bring to the world who Bob Marley was. He was incredibly influenced by countless other artists of the times, Sam Cooke, Fats Domino, etc. When readers get their hands on this biography, they will never want to put it down. Excellent, but...
This book is incredibly well researched, beautiful, compelling and amazing. Robert Nesta Marley's life story is laid out in an almost fictional manner, as the book reads like a novel rather than a biography. I have read this book over, over, over, and over again. The life of Bob Marley was incredibly complex and haunting, far deeper and more magical than his watered down, one dimensional image that has been bestowed upon him by frat boys and dull-eyed stoners countrywide. However, much of the writing falters, and the writer at times seems to a one-man Marley promotional machine, often belittling the other reggae artists of the time, and bemoaning the landscape of the island's music scene after the death of the book's subject. However, I have to stress this is an incredible book and a must-read for fans of Marley's music, and fans of rock, pop, or reggae music in general. An incredible story.
