In the Swedish exhibit were examples of iron quite high in manganese (Figs. 43 to 45a) but otherwise as pure as those already referred to, but these do not segregate. Chill as Explained by Segregation.-Nearly all who have expressed an opinion on the subject of chill ascribe this phenomenon to a union of silicon and carbon. It is quite certain that the best chilling irons are not those with the lowest silicon. The best chilling irons are charcoal-irons, that is, pure irons with low phosphorus and sulphur. CHAPTER XIII. STRENGTH OF CAST IRON. ' WHILE a member of the Committee on Testing of the A. S. M. E., the author made nineteen series of tests with silicon varying between 1% and 3.50%. Records of Tests for Committee A. S. M. E. with all details appear in the Transactions of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, vol. XVI., 1-895, pp. 542 to 568 and 1066 to 1141. also vol. XVII., I896, pp. 675 to 729. The intended size of pairs of test-bars of each series were " l, I" E, 2" X I" and I2" long, 2" I', I," 2," 3," and 4" square, and 24" long, and round bars 19;," Q." and 1%" diameter. The average strength of each pair of test-bars is given in Tables XLVIII and XLIX. i These test-bars were made in green-sand molds lying fiat, and all melting and pouring were exactly as for ordinary work.
