A woman's corpse lies hidden in a cave in the mountains of East Tennessee. Undiscovered for thirty years, her body has been transformed into a near-perfect mummy. Clueless, the local police enlist the help of Dr Bill Brockton, renowned anthropologist and founder of the University of Tennessee's Anthropology Research Facility - the Body Farm - where human corpses are left to the elements, and every manner of decay is fully explored for the sake of science and the cause of justice. The body has been found in Cooke County, a remote community that's clannish, insular and distrustful of outsiders. When Brockton's autopsy discloses an explosive secret, old wounds are reopened and feuds rekindled. As the powerful and uncooperative sheriff and his inept deputy threaten to derail Brockton's investigations, even Brockton, after years surrounded by death and decay, is baffled by this case unfolding in a unique environment, where nothing is quite what it seems.

The fact that this book is written by two individuals, one a forensic anthropologist and the other a professional writer, made this book easy to read but factual in it's content. I was impressed, very impressed.
My only faulting in this book is the "love" angle. There are two women and we don't know if there is any resolution with them and we don't know what happened in "the truck ride" where before they were protagonists and afterwards worked together well. But overall, that was minor in detail to the overall quality of the book.
I've got more JB books ordered.

DON'T HATE ME, BUT...
I'M SORRY JEFFERSON BASS FANS, BUT THIS BOOK WAS SO MUCH LIKE HIS LAST TWO. I WAS PRETTY BORED WITH IT AND COULDN'T FINISH READING IT. THAT'S RARE FOR ME. AS IN A BAD MOVIE, I'M ALWAYS THERE TIL THE END, BUT NOT THIS TIME.
I WAS WAITING FOR SOMETHING NEW AND EXCITING. NO SURPRISES HERE.

Great Writing Team
This was a quick read! Doc B is a fully rounded character that stays with you long after the book ends. Happily, I am on to the second book they've written about him & the "Body Farm", which sounds gruesome but is very educational if you love the forensic sciences. The story was well crafted and could really be happening anywhere today. Plot twists were numerous and the book does not have a give away ending. Kept my attention, I loved it and was very happy with my purchase. This one is a "keeper" in my library!

Body Farm boss as novelist
Carved in Bone, by "Jefferson Bass" -- actually by journalist Jon Jefferson and Dr. Bill Bass, creator and head of the so-called "Body Farm" at UTenn's Anthropology Research Facility -- is the first of a series of novels featuring the fictional counterpart of Dr. Bass: Dr. Bill Brockton.
This first-person narration describes Brockton's work with the sort of detail CSI fans will love. It also creates a reasonably engaging protagonist, one with assorted middle-aged angsts and bodily shortfalls, but one who is absolutely dedicated to the truth.
From the students in his classes to the rural folk in the Appalachians who are the focus of this first case to the Knoxville police detective who actually bears the name of the real cop who champions research into finding children's fingerprints, the characters are believeable, not too familiar to be boring 'types' and contribute to the through-line of the plot.
While I could have done without the personal-life elements -- or rather would have preferred that the unfolding of Brockton's private life were handled with more novelistic skill and panache, I found the actual mystery very engaging and actually hit the web to look up the condition known as adipocere.
I would recommend this book to those who like the mystery of Patricia Cornwall without the gothic personal elements (OMG I'm being stalked again! OMG my niece is genius FBI sleuth! OMG OMG OMG atmosphere beyond readability). It's a calm but fast-moving read with a classical mystery structure, a lot of fascinating scientific information, decent character development, and a satisfying ending.
