'The next morning a large band of Frost Elves came into the glen. I suppose the Snow Fairies had told them about the children, but I wonder who told the shepherd's dog? Frioch must have known somehow, for early in the morning he came up to me, and began to scratch away the snow that had gathered at my feet. Then he ran away, and I suppose he must have told his master that he had found something; for in a short time the shepherd and his brother came up, and they carried the children away. I saw the picture, --the Frost Elves told me to look at it, --and it was very beautiful. I don't think I shall ever forget it. 'Both the children were asleep, but after a long time the boy awoke. I heard afterwards that they had never expected to see him open his eyes. 'But Maggie--they could not wake her. I have seen the boy sometimes since that night. I wonder if he knows that he owes his life, at least in some degree, to his sister?' The pine was a great thinker, but it was not often that he thought aloud. He would have been greatly surprised had he known that this same story was being told--though, of course, in different words--to the Ice King by a Frost Elf. Thought travels quickly, so let us follow the Frost Elves to their far Northern home, and see what they are doing. The last time we saw the king he was presiding at a great council.
