The libretto, however, is entirely fresh and up-to-the-minute, touching on contemporary themes of gender identity. The opera is based on a true story: Restoration-era actor Edward Kynaston (1640-1706) faces dual crises when a royal decree prohibits him from practicing his famed specialty of playing female roles.
