This is the second Western novel by Stan Lynde featuring Merlin Fanshaw (Bodacious Kid is the first). Frankly, the kid was wearing a little thin during the first half of the book, what with all that durned philosophizing and rhapsodizing about the scenery and the weather and horses in general and such. But finally, Penelope Pretty Hawk appeared and things started moving. Still too much description but much more action in the second half. Sure enough, the kid went and blowed his inheritance and got things back on track.
However, if number 3 starts like this one, I will be forced to set it up for target practice before I slog through another 100 pages of beautiful western vistas and other irrelevant stuff.
Don't get me wrong - Stan Lynde writes well and I like the characters. And the kid surely does have a good head, a hearty appetite and a heart of gold. But I didn't like this one near as much as the first.
