Nathaniel Herreshoff was one of the greatest yacht designers and builders America has ever produced. He is credited with the introduction of more new devices in the design of boats than any other man, and the great yachts he designed for six successful defences of the America's Cup caught the imagination of the world. The period of his greatest activity, from 1890 to 1920 was known as "the Herreshoff Era" so greatly did his personality and the yachts he designed dominate the sport. He invented the crosscut sail with cloth running at right angles to the leech and the sail track slides which are now in common use on sailing boats today. In all the important yacht races from 1890 to the time of his death in 1938 Capt Nat Herreshoff's yacht won more prizes than those of all the other yacht designers put together. Written by his son, this biography reveals many of Herreshoff's closely guarded secrets.
