A history of the canneries and the canning industry in the Eastern Shore of Maryland, spanning the period from the 1890s to the 1950s. Burton tells the story of their growth, evolution and eventual decline, describing the vicissitudes of this once flourishing seasonal industry. He devotes separate chapters to describing the history of canning in each of the following counties: Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne's, Somerset, Talbot, Wicomico, and Worcester. Includes lists all the canneries in each county, giving their business name, location, and years in operation. The author, who's interest in the subject grew out of his hobby of collecting Eastern Shore canning house tokens and labels, also provides in this volume illustrations from his collection of cannery material, labels, stencils, boxes, and the metal tokens used to pay workers.
