It may have been perceived racism of the title that has held performers back, but the "yellow" refers only to the color of a figurine that comes to life in the mind of the protagonist, Kornélis. In fact, the opera, although said to be representative of the trend, to paraphrase W.S. Gilbert, of longing for all one sees that's Japanese, is a good deal less exotic and "oriental" than what Arthur Sullivan would offer just a bit more than a decade later.
