Calke Abbey captured the imagination of the country when its plight was revealed in the 1980s. An almost unknown house and large estate had fallen into such a state of decay that it called for a new, and sometimes controversial, approach to conservation, once the battle to save them for the nation had been won. Long managed as a wildlife sanctuary, Calkes venerable parkland and trees are of such importance for the shelter they give to rare insects and fungi that it is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a National Nature Reserve.
