If, like me, you're considering buying this book out of personal interest, you may be considering purchasing the 1st edition instead of the much-more-expensive 2nd edition. I got mine for $9 and I'm glad I got this version, even though I'm sure the 2nd edition would be much more visually attractive. It has numerous illustrations and maps in its 476 pages, all in black and white, aside from a few pages of color plates. The book is divided into 3 parts. Part One is geared to readers without a background in geology, introducing plate tectonics and other important concepts. Part Two is a description of 12 geological regions of the state, plus a chapter on "water in California". Part Three provides a unified geological history of California, relying heavily on plate tectonics.
PROS: Systematic and thorough introduction to California geology, accessible to non-specialists. Can be bought used for a low price - I paid just under $9.
CONS: The book is now 17 years old so it misses any new insights gained since then. The many B&W photos aren't as nice as color photos that are now prevalent in many textbooks.
ADVICE: If you're a non-specialist like me who doesn't need the book for a course, you will do well with this edition, assuming that you can get it for a low price like I did. The cons are outweighed by the enormous savings.(Besides, you can always Google up images of specific formations if you really want to see them in color.)
