The Caipirinha label (named after a potent Brazilian cocktail based on sugarcane brandy) has been fertile ground for wild and experimental music of many kinds, from abstract electronica based on architectural mathematics to avant-garde hip-hop and Brazilian techno. Caipirissima is a compilation that focuses on the various developments in Brazil's experimental dance music scene over the last decade; as you might imagine, its tracks vary widely in tone and texture, from the complex but delicate breakbeats of "Monica No Samba (She Loves Drums 'n' Cavaco)" by DJ Dolores to the jazzy Bahia accents of Amon Tobin's "Sub Tropic." Arto Lindsay is here, no surprise, and contributes the cool and twisted "Whirlwind"; the presence of DJ Soulslinger is a little bit less predictable, but his cut-and-paste turntablism is a welcome addition to the program and draws effectively on Brazilian source material. Ramilson Maia contributes "Bahia Sou," an exercise in gutbucket funk shaded with traditional instrumentation. All of these tracks are worth hearing, and many are astonishingly good. ~ Rick Anderson, Rovi
