This wonderful, dramatic story was written in 1915, but for ninety years it has only existed in a profoundly censored version, "The Border Legion." Joan Randle, in a spirit of anger, sends Jim Cleve out into the lawless country of the mining frontier in Idaho Territory to test his mettle as a man. Then, regretting their quarrel, she goes in pursuit of him, in hope of turning him back, only to be taken captive by the notorious mining camp and stagecoach bandit, Jack Kells. Kells is so intent on having Joan to himself that he kills for it, even some of his own men. When a huge gold strike is made at Alder Creek, Kells and his gang move in to loot the miners. Most disheartening of all for Joan is the fact that Jim Cleve has joined Kells's gang. This powerful tale of tragedy, romance, historical realism, and hope can now at last be read as Zane Grey wrote it. With 109 films based on his work, Zane Grey set a record yet to be equaled by any other author. He was a writer who charted the interiors of the soul through encounters with the wilderness.

Cabin Gulch is the restored version of The Border Legion and has without a doubt the greatest of Zane Grey's villains-the blond beast, Gulden, whose way with women was a rope and a cave. He was the most vicious and depraved of the border bandits.
And, as in earlier works by Zane Grey, this novel had to undergo many editorial changes demanded by his publisher before they would print it. Things today which seem very tame indeed, but yet his editors felt did not belong in fiction, regardless of how historically accurate Zane Grey was being to actual events upon which this book was based.
When Joan Randle decides to follow her boyfriend Jim Cleve after he departs because of a quarrel, she finds herself captured by this outlaw gang and held, only to find out Jim has joined them as well. (She had accused Jim of not being man enough to even be bad, so he sets out to prove her wrong.)
Cabin Gulch is a fascinating look at what happens to men, I should say, mankind, when driven by their passions and left to revert to the barbaric when the environment is one of dog eat dog, i.e. "survival of the fittest". This was the phrase used by Darwin and popularized by Zane Grey, as he subscribed to some of Darwin's theories, as seen in many of his novels as he expressed his philosophy of life, and his concerns for America in his writings. But if one goes beyond any hidden agenda and reads this book as a novel of escapism and adventure and romance it is a good read I think you will enjoy.
In the foreword to this book, Jon Tuska says the works of the German philosopher Frederick Nietzache were very popular among American and European authors during the early decades of the Twentieth Century. It was he who introduced the idea of the blond beast in "On the Genealogy of Morality" (1887) and Tuska presents a selection from the book I will not repeat here. But the idea is that these men enjoy the freedom from all social constraint in the wilderness, and fall back into a beast of prey, like a rejoicing monster committing any type of crime or violence. Whether this is where Zane Grey got his idea for Gulden I cannot say, nor can Jon Tuska. It is just a possible theory.
When Zane Grey submitted his novel to Bob Davis for publication in his magazine Davis objected to the rape scene just as he had rejected to the rape of Fay Larkin and her giving birth to a child while in Mormon captivity as a sealed wife in The Desert Crucible. Knowing this Zane Grey did not dare allow Kells to succeed in his attempt to rape Joan Randle. Yet, if he could not actually depict the rape scene realistically, he was allowed a more subtle way of getting his point across since Joan comes to love Jack Kells, and confesses to him near the end of the story that were it not for Jim Cleve, she would surely have been Kells' woman and remain faithful to him. With that agreed to by Davis, he was still objecting to the language used by many of the characters and the violence used by the outlaws against the miners of Alder Creek. Zane Grey did model this part of the story on the real life Henry Plummer and his gang who created a reign of terror and robbery and hangings in Alder Gulch, Montana Territory. Still, it did not matter to the editor how historically accurate Zane Grey was being with his tale. As far as Davis was concerned such realism however faithful to history had no place in fiction. Cabin Gulch restores what was removed, and brings new excitement and passion to the story of Joan Randle's confinement among the worst of the worst in society.
