Here they get a powerful argument in favor from pianist Nikolai Lugansky, who delivers fireworks where the score calls for them but allows space in the scores for their subtler details. There is not just Liszt and Bach in these pieces, but a good deal of Franck himself, with his trademark connections between different sections of a composition. These connections emerge in the tripartite structure of the first three works on the program, where the "extra" movement infuses, or sometimes abstracts, tonal and motivic features of the prelude and fugue or "final."
