Once there, the pirates escaped the ship and a squad of Rangers was sent to recapture them. While in pursuit, the Rangers encountered a group of survivors from the lost colony ship CSS Mirage, lost 161 years previously. The Mirage survivors had all linked with a silicon base lifeforms called Bummers that could symbiotically link with humans. The linkage provided benefits to the humans including telepathy, increased intelligence, teleportation, invisibility and limited weapons defense. The Bummers could turn someone guilty of murder, rape, or enslavement to stone. The galaxy had been overrun with pirates guilty of these offenses and the Bummers have declared war on them.
