If you want to know just how hard it was to cross America during the pioneer days, take a look at this book. I found it to be fascinating because the author used the actual written words of women who had the courage and stamina to come west.
Miller didn't just tell about folks who lived in log cabins; women told how they felt about living in ?soddies? and those who had to live in their wagon until some stable home could be built. It really caught my attention when one woman described how a bull snake dropped out of the ceiling of their soddie and landed on the occupants in the bed!
The author also took a look at the women already living in the West when the Europeans came by wagon. The photos of women from different Indian tribes were amazing. The author made an effort to include black women and their difficulties and triumphs.
This is a well-rounded view of the role of women in the West ? without the sugar-coating. I thought the text and pictures were mesmerizing. I have a whole new appreciation for ALL the women who called the West home.
