The Indian Buddhist world abounds with goddesses--graceful nature divinities, maternal nurturers, potent healers, mighty protectors, transcendent wisdom figures, cosmic mothers of liberation, and dancing female Buddhas. Despite their importance in Buddhist thought and practice, female deities have received relatively little scholarly attention, and no comprehensive study of the female pantheon has been available. Buddhist Goddesses of India chronicles the histories, legends, and artistic portrayals of nineteen goddesses and several related human figures and texts. Beautifully illustrated and drawing on a sweeping range of material, from devotional poetry and meditation manuals to rituals and artistic images, Shaw reveals the character, powers, and practice traditions of the female divinities in this definitive and essential guide.

This is an absolutely fabulous book on the origins of Mahayana Buddhism's goddesses, whose roots lie in India. In many ways this is a crucial and yet little addressed topic, since Mahayana Buddhism is associated with North Asia (China, Japan, Korea) and many of the goddesses are usually treated (if discussed at all) in the context of Tibet and Vajrayana Buddhism where they would tend to be eclipsed by much of the uniquely TIbetan contribution to Buddhism. Putting the Buddhist goddesses in their original Indian context at the dawn of Mahayana Buddhism is therefore vitally important from a historical standpoint. Not only does this work embody such a relatively rare, but crucial, approach, but it does so masterfully. The book is also profusely illustrated - a feature that not only makes for a beautiful volume but also greatly enhances the usefullness of the information that the sizeable tome conveys. This beautiful book is an indispensable source and reference work related to the origins of Mahayana Buddhism and specifically to the goddesses and/or Boddhisatvas associated with it.
