It has long been widely assumed that the Khmer Rouge had a centralized plan to wipe out the entire Buddhist monastic order. This book explores the assumption in a systematic way. The author finds that the reality was somewhat less than many have believed. Monks were harassed and eliminated, individually and sometimes en masses, but he shows that other factors, too created conditions that made it very difficult for Buddhism as an institution to survive.
