Following the trend of some contemporary conductors to record the earliest versions of Anton Bruckner's symphonies, Gerd Schaller joins Dennis Russell Davies, Marcus Bosch, Simone Young, Eliahu Inbal, and several others who find that the most original and compelling music is found in them, and argue that their value is equal to the more familiar and metrically regularized revisions. The differences between the various states of the Symphony No. 1 and the Symphony No. 2 are noticeable, but not as consequential as are features in the revisions of Symphony No. 3, of which the longer first version is notable for its extensive Wagner quotations and Bruckner's subsequent removal of them in published editions. Schaller and the Philharmonie Festiva play with alertness and energy, and make a fair case for choosing the "Ur-text" recordings, chiefly because they make them sound magnificent in the highly resonant church setting.
