Simone Young's finely polished audiophile recordings of the symphonies of Anton Bruckner have been among Oehms Classics' most eagerly sought releases, and her advocacy of the original versions has made a compelling case for their regular performance. Yet there is only one version of the Symphony in F minor, nicknamed the Studiensinfonie (Study Symphony) and curiously counted as No. 00, and there isn't much to get excited about because this is the least Brucknerian of the symphonies. Composed in 1863, the work owes a considerable debt to the conservative outlook of Mendelssohn and Schumann, and Bruckner had yet to experience the revolutionary music of Wagner, which influenced his symphonies from the Second onward. Young and the Hamburg Philharmonic present the work with absolute professionalism and lively expressions, so the music is perfectly enjoyable as a typical Romantic symphony of the German school, though little is characteristic of its composer.
