Composed in 1863, the work owes a considerable debt to the conservative outlook of Mendelssohn and Schumann, and Bruckner had yet to experience the revolutionary music of Wagner, which influenced his symphonies from the Second onward. Young and the Hamburg Philharmonic present the work with absolute professionalism and lively expressions, so the music is perfectly enjoyable as a typical Romantic symphony of the German school, though little is characteristic of its composer.
