A young boy(HUGH) decides to run away with his dog, from very nasty step-parents, after one beating too many. The book is set in the late 1500's.His father went to Oxford as a servant to a rich scholar, but was allowed to go to the university to study, and paying for it by serving the other young man.He taught his son to read,/write,and Hugh wants to go to do the same thing, but he comes across a group of traveling actors who allow him to join them on their travels, after loads of adventures he ends up with the family who first employed his Father.
I found the whole story from start to finish very enjoyable, dare I say it,Rosemary Sutcliff at her best.

Brother Dusty Feet
Rosemary Sutcliff is the best kids' author I read when I was young. Rereading all of these books now as I read them to my children over the last 10 years reinforces that fact. Each story is told grippingly, ties into key periods of Britain's history (which inspires kids to learn more), and with a message that Life is not about being fair, but making the best of what one can under one's own terms as much as possible. Brother Dusty Feet is well worth the read.
